Appliqué Tips

    TIP 1: Interesting centres!

Adding dimensional details to your appliqué flowers is a great way to increase the textural interest of your designs.

Flower centres can be developed by the addition of a small Suffolk puff (yo-yo).  These are very easy to make.

Cut a circle at least twice the size of the finished puff (yo-yo).

Work a row of small stitches around the outer edge and pull up tightly.

Alternatively add ⅛  inch to the basic circle and turn a small hem stitching close to the fold and pull up tightly.  This gives a neatened edge.

Before stitching the puff (yo-yo) to the centre of the flower a frayed gathered strip of fabric can be placed in the centre of the flower and then the puff (yo-yo) positioned on top. This gives a lovely centre to an open rose.

(Quick tip: Save the frayed selvedge you find
on some fabrics and use in this way.)

TIP 2: An easy way to attach dimensional details.

Sew dimensional flowers in place after pressing the appliqué. Very dimensional features are easier to stitch in position if they are attached with small stitches worked on the BACK of the work just inside the outer edge of the feature.
